Interlinked alarms mean that when one detects smoke or heat, they all sound — giving everyone the earliest possible warning, wherever they are in the property. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I legally need interlinked alarms?
Requirements vary. For new installations, current standards (BS 5839-6) recommend mains-wired, interlinked alarms. Landlords in England must provide at least one working smoke alarm on every storey, plus a carbon monoxide alarm in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance. We'll advise on what your property needs.
Where should alarms be fitted?
As a guide, a smoke alarm on every storey and on escape routes such as hallways and landings, with a heat alarm in the kitchen (where smoke alarms can cause false alarms). We position everything correctly for the layout of your home.
Mains-wired or battery — what's better?
Mains-wired alarms with battery backup are the most reliable, as they don't depend on someone remembering to replace batteries. Interlinking them means they all sound together, which a set of standalone battery alarms can't do.
Can you interlink alarms without rewiring?
Yes. Where running cables between alarms isn't practical, we can fit radio-linked (RF) interlinked alarms so they still communicate with each other wirelessly while remaining mains-powered.
How often should alarms be replaced?
Smoke and heat alarms have a typical lifespan of around 10 years. If yours are older than that, or you're unsure of their age, it's worth replacing them. We can remove old units and fit new ones as part of the job.
